Proposal to construct third runway, Terminal 3 gains ground
THE National Economic and Development Authority-Investment Coordinating Committee (Neda-ICC) has requested the Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority (MCIAA) to submit documents related to the proposed third runway project. GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corp. (GMCAC) has submitted a proposal to construct the third runway with a reclamation project in Barangay Ibo, Lapu-Lapu City and a third terminal.
“Once submitted, then we can have a meeting with the Neda-ICC to discuss the GMCAC proposal,” said MCIAA General Manager Steve Dicdican. The MCIAA has already issued a certificate of Original Proposal Status (OPS), which guarantees that it will no longer accept a similar proposal from other parties. The documents that the Neda-ICC asked for include the agreement of MCIAA to extend the concession of GMCAC to operate the Mactan airport under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) scheme from 25 years to 50 years. GMCAC has a contract to manage both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 for 25 years, or from 2014 to 2039.
However, if GMCAC will construct the third runway and third terminal, the duration of the contract may be extended to 50 years. Dicdican said that if the Neda-ICC approves it, the GMCAC proposal will be endorsed to the Neda Board chaired by President Duterte for final approval. (EOB)
