Osmeña, Labella want 2019 polls to push through, oppose speaker Alvarez's recommendation
CEBU City Mayor Tomas Osmeña said the proposal to postpone the 2019 midterm elections to pave the way for a shift in the form of government is just a selfish desire of House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez.
“The agenda of Alvarez is that he can’t win in the next election, that’s why I suspect what he’s trying to do is not for the benefit of the country. It’s for the benefit of Speaker Alvarez,” he said.
“How can you be Speaker of the House if you can’t win as congressman? The way to do it is no election so he will still be the congressman. It’s a very selfish agenda and the people should know,” he said.
Osmeña said Alvarez is doing the government a disservice and will just give President Rodrigo Duterte a bad image.
Earlier, Alvarez said that if the administration wants to focus on shifting to federalism, it should cancel the midterm elections to make sure that lawmakers will be available.
For his part, Vice Mayor Edgardo Labella said he will leave it to Congress and the President to decide, although he prefers that an election will be held.
“Because that is what’s provided in the law. But if there are sufficient justifications considering the shift from unitary form of government to federalism, then I think we’ll submit that to the wisdom of the legislators and the President,” he said.
If the elections are postponed, Labella said public officials will continue to serve until the next election. (RVC)
